The administration of the University of Sierra Leone has announced a series of preventive measures aimed at protecting staff, students, and visitors from the threat of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) and other infectious diseases.
In an official notice signed by Registrar Munda J. S. Lebbie, the University stated that reports of confirmed Ebola cases in parts of Africa have prompted the institution to strengthen health and safety protocols across all its campuses.
The directive, issued to all Deputy Registrars, requires registries and administrative units to immediately implement strict precautionary measures. These include discouraging handshakes and unnecessary physical contact, providing handwashing facilities and alcohol-based sanitizers at strategic locations, and encouraging regular hand hygiene before entering offices, classrooms, and public spaces.
The University has also instructed departments and administrative units to ensure that offices, lecture theatres, libraries, hostels, cafeterias, reception areas, and conference rooms are equipped with adequate hygiene facilities. Frequent cleaning and disinfection of commonly touched surfaces such as door handles, desks, railings, and counters have also been mandated.
In addition, individuals displaying symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, unexplained bleeding, weakness, or severe illness are advised to seek immediate medical attention and avoid public gatherings. Suspected cases or health concerns should be promptly reported to University Health Services and relevant authorities.
The notice further calls on Heads of Departments, Unit Heads, and Administrative Officers to intensify awareness campaigns on personal hygiene and compliance with preventive measures. Members of the university community are urged to remain calm, avoid spreading misinformation, and cooperate fully with health and administrative directives.
The University Administration emphasized that safeguarding the health and well-being of the campus community remains a top priority and appealed for the full cooperation of staff and students in maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment.
The preventive measures will remain in effect until further notice.
