The Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM), University of Sierra Leone, has announced the rescheduling of academic activities on Fridays to allow Muslim students and staff adequate time to observe Jumu’ah (Friday) prayers.
According to a notice issued by the Office of the Deputy Registrar, all lectures, tests, presentations, assignment submissions, and other official academic activities are prohibited from being scheduled between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Fridays, effective immediately.
The university stated that the decision reflects its commitment to religious tolerance, inclusivity, and diversity, ensuring that Muslim members of the institution can fulfill their religious obligations without conflicting with academic responsibilities.
Lecturers whose classes are affected by the new arrangement have been instructed to work closely with the Head of Student and Academic Affairs, Heads of Departments, and Deans of Faculties to make the necessary adjustments and reschedule affected sessions.
IPAM emphasized that, as a student-centred institution, it remains dedicated to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusivity within the university community. Faculty leaders have also been urged to ensure strict adherence to the directive.
The notice was signed by Albert S. Baio, Deputy Registrar, and takes immediate effect.
